SEO infrastructure built on a single CMS's proprietary schema plugin or content tooling creates a migration tax. When you change platforms - and most sites change CMS at least once every few years - the structured data disappears, the content workflow breaks, and whatever technical work you invested in the previous platform does not transfer.
This article covers how to implement structured data and maintain an AI-assisted content process in ways that are portable across platforms, so your SEO foundation travels with you when the platform changes.
Why CMS Lock-In Is an SEO Risk
Lock-in in this context is not about your content - the words in your articles and product pages are portable regardless of platform. The risk is in three areas:
Schema implementation. Most CMS schema plugins work by injecting markup through their own system, tied to their post types and field structure. Migrating from WordPress to Webflow does not bring your Yoast schema configuration with it. You rebuild from scratch.
Metadata and title tag management. SEO plugins store title and description overrides in the CMS database. Export the content, and you lose the metadata unless you export and reformat it manually.
Content structure assumptions. Some platforms generate heading hierarchies, canonical tags, and pagination signals automatically. Moving to a platform that does not generates technical debt immediately.
The solution is treating schema and structured metadata as owned data rather than plugin configuration - storing and generating it in ways that are not tied to a specific CMS's internal model.
JSON-LD: The Platform-Portable Schema Standard
JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data) is the format recommended by Google for structured data. It is injected as a <script type="application/ld+json"> block in the page head, which means it can be added to any platform that allows head tag customization.
This matters for portability: JSON-LD schema lives in the page head, not in the CMS's proprietary field system. You can copy a JSON-LD block from a WordPress page and paste it into a Webflow page custom code section and it works identically.
The simplest mental model: write your schema as standalone JSON-LD blocks, store them in a version-controlled format (a config file, a content management spreadsheet, or a headless CMS field), and inject them at render time. The injection method changes per platform. The schema itself does not.
Platform-Specific Implementation
WordPress
WordPress with Yoast SEO or Rank Math handles most schema automatically for standard content types. For custom schema not covered by the plugin:
- Add custom JSON-LD blocks via the theme's
wp_headhook infunctions.php - Use a child theme or a code snippets plugin to avoid losing changes on theme updates
- For page-specific schema, use a custom field (ACF or native block meta) that outputs JSON-LD in the page head
The important practice is to also store the raw JSON-LD for important schema blocks outside of WordPress - in a repository or spreadsheet - so migration does not require re-creating it from scratch.
Webflow
Webflow supports custom code in the project-level head (site settings) and per-page custom code sections. For site-wide schema (Organization, WebSite), use the project-level head code. For page-specific schema (Article, Product, FAQPage), use the per-page custom code section.
Webflow CMS items support custom fields, but they do not natively inject structured data from those fields. Options:
- Use Webflow's CMS API to pull field values and generate JSON-LD server-side, then inject it into the page
- Use a third-party schema tool like Schema App that connects to Webflow via API
- For simpler implementations, maintain a schema template in the page's custom code section and update the variable values manually when content changes
Framer
Framer is a newer entrant with more limited native SEO controls. Custom code injection in Framer is done through the custom code section in site settings (sitewide) or per-page overrides. JSON-LD follows the same pattern as Webflow - inject as a script block.
For Framer sites with significant structured data needs, the most reliable approach is using a headless schema management layer: store schema definitions separately, generate the JSON-LD programmatically, and include it as a code override per page. This adds some complexity but removes any dependency on Framer's SEO roadmap.
Custom and Headless Sites
Custom-built sites (Next.js, Nuxt, SvelteKit, etc.) have the most flexibility. Schema injection should be part of the component or layout system:
- A shared

For Next.js specifically, the <Head> component (Pages Router) or the metadata export (App Router) handle most metadata. JSON-LD schema is typically injected as a dangerouslySetInnerHTML script block in the layout or page component.
Content Validation: Keeping Schema Accurate Over Time
Schema that is deployed and forgotten is often worse than no schema. Stale schema (outdated prices, incorrect hours, missing review counts) generates validation warnings and, in some cases, manual actions from Google's quality review team.
A practical validation workflow:
- After any deployment that touches page structure or content: run affected pages through Google's Rich Results Test
- Monthly: check Google Search Console's Rich Results report for new errors or warnings
- Quarterly: manually verify that dynamic values in schema (prices, hours, availability) match what is displayed on the page
Automating step 1 is feasible for teams with CI/CD pipelines. There are open-source tools that headlessly load pages and extract schema for validation, though this is more common in enterprise environments than in small team setups.
AI-Assisted Content Workflow Without Platform Lock-In
The second part of avoiding lock-in is maintaining a portable AI-assisted writing workflow. Many content platforms now include built-in AI writing features. These are convenient but create dependency - your prompts, content briefs, and workflow live inside the platform.
A portable AI content workflow:
Keep prompts and briefs in version control. Store your content brief templates and reusable prompts as text files in a repository or a docs system you own. These are more valuable than the individual pieces of content they produce, and losing them on a platform migration is a real setback.
Use platform-agnostic AI tools for drafting. Tools like Claude, ChatGPT, and Frase operate independently of your CMS. Content drafted in these tools can be published to any CMS. Avoiding deep integration with a single CMS's AI features preserves this portability.
Store structured content data separately. For programmatic or data-driven content, keep the source data in a spreadsheet or lightweight CMS (like Contentful or Sanity) that can feed any frontend. Do not let the data live exclusively in a CMS with limited export options.
Validate content against your own checklist. An AI-assisted content process should still include a human review pass that checks for factual accuracy, internal link placement, and alignment with your target query. Migrating Schema Between Platforms
When a migration is coming, a structured export process preserves schema work:
- Crawl the current site with Screaming Frog with schema extraction enabled - it exports the JSON-LD from each page into a spreadsheet
- Map each schema block to the corresponding new URL
- Re-inject the schema blocks into the new platform, updating any field values that have changed
- Validate the new pages with the Rich Results Test before the migration goes live
This process takes a day or two for a site with well-organized schema. It saves weeks of diagnosing rich result losses post-migration.

Does the CMS I choose significantly affect my SEO potential?
At the technical level, any CMS that allows head tag customization, canonical configuration, and sitemap generation can support solid SEO. The differences between WordPress, Webflow, Framer, and custom stacks are more about workflow efficiency and maintenance overhead than about SEO ceiling. A custom Next.js site with good schema and metadata management will not outrank a well-configured WordPress site just because of the platform choice.
Is it worth using a dedicated schema plugin vs. writing JSON-LD manually?
Plugins are faster for standard content types and are appropriate for most sites. Manual JSON-LD is worth the effort when: the content type you need is not covered by the plugin, you want precise control over every field, or you are managing schema across a multi-CMS environment and want a single source of truth. How do I handle schema for AI-generated content?
The schema itself does not change based on how the content was written. If the page is an article, it gets Article schema. If it has a FAQ section, it gets FAQPage schema. The relevant consideration for AI-generated content is factual accuracy in schema values - AI-generated content can introduce incorrect claims that are then formalized in schema.
